Frequently Asked Questions

This is a two-day bicycle ride in April through the beautiful Texas countryside between Houston and Austin. The primary purpose of the ride is to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Lone Star Chapter. Along the way, we trust you will have a great time. And, while this sounds like a cliché, there are few things in life quite like the feeling you’ll get when you cross the finish line in Austin.

MS (Multiple Sclerosis) is a disease of the central nervous system that can strike anyone. The symptoms can be devastating for previously active people. However, in the last few years, research and new drugs have made some remarkable progress and offer new hope to MS sufferers.

The money you raise supports this ongoing research as well as community programs and direct services to those struggling with the effects of MS. The minimum pledge is $400, but once you know about this disease and the efforts to combat it, it is very easy to raise more.

Most people can successfully complete the BP MS150. You should consult your doctor before undertaking any significant increase in physical activity. However, your doctor will in most cases support this activity. You will have a more enjoyable ride if you start training early and build gradually.

The training ride series offered by Conoco Phillips Bike Club in conjunction with Team BP is designed to do this, and there are other programs available that can help you achieve your goal, including the BP Wellness Center located in Westlake 4.  In addition, the Bike Skills and Safety clinic will help teach you skills to be a better rider.

The BP MS150 site can provide more information about weekend logistics and preparation for the ride (such as packing list, etc). The MS Society website will also list official bike stores, who offer bike maintenance classes and spin classes. In addition, Team BP and the Wellness Center may offer brown bag seminars on conditioning, "What to Expect", and other applicable topics. Check the Team BP website for more information.  Check the About the Ride page on the MS website for ride info.

The BP MS150 site can provide more information about fundraising (suggestions, websites and pertinent information)  Check the Support the Ride page on the MS website for ride info.

The end of the first day of riding and start for the second day is in La Grange. There will be a Team BP tent with food & drink. Your bags will be delivered there at the end of the first day (and to Austin the second day). There will be massages for the riders so you’ll be ready to go the next day.

There is also access to showers through the MS Society. You can either spend the night there in our tent or stay in one of the hotel rooms nearby. The MS Society will provide transportation to and from specific hotels / motels. Check their website. You are responsible for the expense of your hotel stay.

There is a fee of $25 per person for BP employees and top fundraisers to join Team BP to help offset the cost of the food, entertainment and amenities at La Grange and Austin, and includes one Team BP jersey.  The registration fee for Non-BP employees is $75 and includes a Team BP jersey.  This cost is not refundable unless you are waitlisted and Team BP cannot put you on the team through no fault of your own (i.e. you took the safety class, registered with the MS Society, etc.)

Optional massages are also available in La Grange for $20/15 minutes, including tip.

Team BP is committed to making the BP MS150 the best and safest ride possible. We do everything we can to help make this event as much fun as possible, and accidents decrease the “fun quotient.”

We believe that by offering a Bike Skills clinic, we will make our riders better, safer and more confident. Besides, we think the clinics themselves will be fun and worthwhile to all participants.

No, your clinic satisfies the minimum requirement for three years. However, we strongly encourage you to either take a refresher clinic or re-certification clinic! You must take a class if you are a first time Team BP rider or if you took the class prior to 2008.

Yes, you can sign up for the Bike Skills and Safety clinic whenever you are ready. Please make sure you can honor your commitment to attend the class.  You will not be allowed to ride with Team BP if you do not meet the safety clinic requirements.

Yes, we understand that unexpected things come up. You can reschedule up to three days before the class starts. Please try to minimize rescheduling, as it makes filling the classes more difficult, and we have barely enough slots for all our riders.

If it is within the three-day window, you can try to swap with another Team BP rider.

Team BP members must register with both the MS Society and Team BP. In addition, riders must have waivers of liability for both BP and the MS Society on file before packet pick-up. The Team BP waiver is available on this website on the "Documents" page. The MS Society waiver is found on their website.

The BP Code of Conduct directs us to be completely transparent in matters that involve suppliers and vendors.

  • BP participates in, and sometimes sponsors, charity events to which our suppliers may provide donations. Often this is done at a high level and the donation is made directly to the charity. This makes it clear that the donation is intended for the charity and not BP.
  • In the case of events such as the BP MS 150 where individuals raise money for a charity through the solicitation of donors, there are a number of ways in which a conflict of interest – or the perception of a conflict – could occur. It is important for BP employees to remember the importance of transparency and to follow the guidelines in the Code of Conduct.
  • The following instructions apply when a supplier or vendor is making a donation in the name of his company.
  • In the case of donations received by BP employees from suppliers/vendors:

    • Any contribution over $50 should be discussed with the individual’s line manager and/or the GVP.
    • The individual seeking the donation should not have direct responsibility for the contract or relationship with the vendor.
    • All donations must be recorded in the Business Unit’s Gift Register.
    • If possible, the contribution should be made directly to the charity and not to the individual soliciting support.
    • In any case, the contribution check MUST be made out directly to the charity and not the individual.
    • Under no circumstances should an individual accept cash.
  • There may be situations where a BP employee receives a private individual (rather than corporate) pledge from a person involved with a vendor or supplier company. In that case, particular care should be made to retain the transparency of the situation. Even though the donor may consider it a private matter, the contract relationship with BP could be construed as a conflict.

If you have specific questions, please contact your Compliance and Ethics Leader (CEL) or BP America Compliance and Ethics Manager.
