Safety Messages for Team BP Riders
- Always wear your helmet! This is non-negotiable.
- For a safe start to your BP MS150 training program, have your brakes, gears and frame checked by a professional. Before each ride, check your bike over thoroughly (tire pressure, tire condition, brakes, quick releases,
- To avoid injury, build up your endurance gradually with weekly long rides. The MS150 is more enjoyable when your body is properly prepared.
- Learn to ride in a group by attending the training rides. There will be thousands of cyclists at the BP MS150. Learn how to ride in a large group.
- Pace yourself. The MS150 is not a race. Ride at a comfortable speed.
- Never wear headphones or use a cell phone on a bicycle, keep all your senses on the road and traffic.
- Avoid collisions by overtaking other cyclists on the left, by calling out "On your left". Communication is key when in a large group.
- Ride no more than two-abreast when there is a shoulder or no vehicular traffic, single file where there is no shoulder or when other bicyclist are passing.
- Carry a cell phone in case you need emergency services, but keep it turned off while you are riding! Keep emergency contacts in your phone. Carry ID, money and insurance card.
- To avoid getting stranded, always carry a puncture repair kit. Practice changing a tire at home. Stop and offer assistance to riders who need roadside repairs. Alert traffic and on-coming riders to the hazard.
- Drink, Drink, Drink! Keep hydrated on long rides by consuming at least one bottle of water or sports drink per hour. Always carry at least one water bottle (or a Camelbak) with you at all times.
