Julie McMaster: Top 300 Fundraiser
Julie McMaster: Top 300 Fundraiser
I began riding with Team BP in 2002 to train for my first MS150. That year, my main reason for riding was for a physical challenge. I had just moved down from Alaska, where I was born and raised, and the thought of riding 187 miles from Houston to Austin seemed unachievable. The ConocoPhillips training series really helped in getting my legs ready for the hills to Austin.
I recall the end of the first day of that MS150 riding into LaGrange, an event that made me realize that it was much more than “just a bike ride.” I remember clearly a lady, sitting in a wheel chair, holding a sign that read “thank you for helping me, thank you for riding for all of us with MS.”
That year, I achieved the “Top 300 Club” Fundraiser status. Each and every year I try to raise the bar in my fundraising efforts. My motto has always been “I ride for those who can’t ... yet, I ride to help find a cure.”Biking has become a passion of mine, and I have enjoyed the benefits of biking to work, joining local bike clubs and biking year round. I also like to give back to the sport and have been a ride marshal for several years, volunteering to marshal not only in the BP MS150, but many local charity rides.
As a ride marshal, I have been first responder to more bike accidents than I care to talk about, so I ask that if you ride this year please be safe and as my car license plate reads “share the road y’all.” This year I am looking forward to riding my ninth MS 150 with my younger sister, Tina, who will be traveling down from Alaska to ride with Team BP.
