Bob & Nubia Seibert:

Critz CullenBOB & NUBIA SEIBERT: This is our first year riding the BP MS150, and it feels good to be helping the MS Society. My wife, Nubia, also sees this as an opportunity to gain cycling experience, so she will be able to participate in a cycling adventure, like our son Kevin and I did last year.

We rode our mountain bikes from Mexico to Canada, up the Rocky Mountain Range, self-supported, camping at night. My son introduced me to mountain biking in May 2008, and after three rides I was hooked. However, it was a steep learning curve: in two different spills, I broke my hand, broke four ribs, and punctured a lung. Finally, a broken collar bone landed me in surgery, plus two months rehab. Four months later, Kevin and I started the 2,600 mile ride, crisscrossing the backbone of the Rockies 36 times, which is equivalent to climbing Mount Everest six times.

Temperatures ranged from 100F in the New Mexico desert to 20F in the mountains of Colorado. It rained in Mexico, and we dealt with mud, and in Colorado it rained, sleeted and snowed. It was a long haul, but we completed the journey one pedal stroke at a time.

Nubia is no stranger to adventure trips. She trekked 6-8 hours a day in the jungle of Borneo for 21 days, unsupported, carrying a heavy pack so full of food, there was no room for a tent or sleeping bag, only a small piece of plastic to sleeping on. She then solo-climbed Mt. Kinnabalu, the tallest mountain in Asia. This summer she trekked the Inca trails of Machu Picchu and stayed in the jungle of the amazons for three weeks. When asked how she does it, she replies quickly, “One step at a time. The human body is amazing.  As long as the mind does not give up, the body keeps going.”

The longest she has ever ridden a bicycle was 10 miles, 15 years ago. She completed the first 30 mile training ride, taking it slow and easy, and finishing with energy to spare. Now she's pumped. “The ride was fun, and the synergy of all the people is energizing.”

We count our blessings every day and are eager to support the MS Society, but never realized how much fun it would be.
