Team BP MS150 - Announcements

Bike Around the Bay

October 16-17 – sponsored by Shell

Join us for this premier 2-day ride to help the Galveston Bay Foundation preserve, protect and enhance Galveston Bay – one of the world’s most productive estuaries. Its balanced programs in advocacy, conservation, education, and research strive to ensure that Galveston Bay remains a beautiful and productive place for generations to come.

Bike Around the Bay is a fully supported two-day, 150-mile bicycle ride around Galveston Bay showcasing the natural beauty of Galveston Bay and benefiting the Galveston Bay Foundation. The ride starts in Anahuac, Texas, and continues along a scenic route that includes many fascinating sights and highlights. Riders will spend the night in Galveston where they will enjoy an informal Beach Party at Moody Gardens’ Palm Beach. Day 2 will bring the riders north along the west side of Galveston Bay where they will ultimately finish outside of Baytown, Texas.

Register early:

  • $100 - Early-bird registration until July 15.
  • $120 - Registration July 16 to September 30.
  • $140 - Late registration; online registration ends October 12.

And remember to reserve your hotel room soon!

Registration, hotel reservation, and other ride information is available at: http://bikearoundthebay.org/index.htm

$1 million and counting!

Congratulations to everyone on Team BP – you’ve raised more than $1.04M and beat our team fundraising goal for the year.  Overall teams for this year’s BP MS-150 have raised more than $15.5M for the MS Society, 86% of their goal.

So make sure to turn in any matching funds paperwork to increase your fundraising – it will still count toward this year’s totals!

Thanks for all your efforts,

2010 BP MS150 ‘a fantastic success’

The 2010 BP MS150 was a fantastic success.  More than 13,000 riders participated to raise money for and awareness of MS.

Fundraising:

Funds are due May 18, 2010.  We recognize that everyone is extremely busy, but there are still quite a few Team BP riders who have not raised the required $400.

If you do not raise the required $400, you will not be allowed to ride in another MS150 bike event until your commitment is fulfilled, nor will you be able to ride with Team BP.

Click HERE for the matching form for BP employees.  If you are a direct BP employee, you can match your entire fundraising effort (all of your fundraising except that which is matched by another company or program).  If you are not a BP employee, but have received a donation from a BP employee, that employee can get matching funds for his/her donation.  Matching funds forms must be signed by the BP employee’s line manager or HR representative.

If you are not a direct BP employee nor have you gotten any donations from BP employees, please disregard the form.  But many other companies have matching donations.  Ask your donors if their company has such a program.

Summary of Team BP fundraising efforts:

  • Team Total:  $830,812.08 - We have still not reached our goal of $1,000,000
  • $12K and up fundraisers: 5
  • $6,030 (last year’s Club 300 Threshold): 18
  • $1000+ fundraisers: 224
  • Between $401-$999: 254 - Remember, if you raise over $1000, you get first chance at registering on Team BP and a reduced registration fee!!
  • $400-$500 fundraisers: 87
  • Below $400: 270 - Without $400 minimum fundraising, you are not eligible to ride next year!!
  • At $0: 143 - Without $400 minimum fundraising, you are not eligible to ride next year!!

Remember: fundraising is the reason we ride.

How to set up your personal fundraising page

Your MS Society participant center is an excellent tool to help you fund-raise in an extremely efficient and simple way. While the tool does have some small quirks, set-up is actually easier than you might think. Using this tool will help you improve your fundraising efforts, and will ultimately help us to once again beat our team fundraising goal of $1 million!

Hilary Trammell, team captain for Clay Walker’s Band Against MS (BAMS) team and trainer for Mustang Engineering, created the link below. This is the same information she taught at our last team lunch and learn. The presentation provides very clear, step-by-step instructions to access the system through the NMSS website, and set up your fundraising page. It also includes information to fund-raise through Facebook. Please make sure your sound is turned on so you can hear her verbal instructions during the presentation.

The link: MS Webinar for Convio

The class should load immediately. If there is any delay, check to make sure your browser isn’t prompting you to install “ActiveX” – if it is, then click “allow to install.” The presentation should start after that.

Young BP MS150 rider talks to Disney

Rider Nasim Dimassi is a great young ambassador who is representing Team BP proudly. Last week he talked about his participation in the 2010 BP MS 150 on Radio Disney.

“I've registered for BP MS150 to fulfill a personal challenge, and to help the National MS Society fund research, advocate for change, and help people with MS and their families lead powerful lives,” Nasim says. “I believe in the work they do and want to be an active part of it.”

Packet Pick-Up, and other important team info

Please read this information and attached files carefully to find out about Team BP packet pick-up, logistics for the BP MS150 weekend, and other important information. If you do not see the information you need, please use this website’s search box.

There are more than 750 riders on Team BP and in the weeks before the ride there may be a delay in answering individual emails.  The team captains will answer the most important ones first, and if the info is on the Team BP or NMSS website, the answer will  direct you there.

Packet pick-up

Team BP will have a packet pick-up for the WestLake campus on March 25, 2010 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the WL1 cafeteria.  You must have completed your safety clinic requirements, be registered with Team BP, have paid all money owed, and have turned in both the Team BP and NMSS waivers.  If you do not have all of these items complete, you will not be able to pick up your packet and get your jersey.  Please also remember if you need a packet for a minor, the NMSS waiver must be notarized.

The packet pickup for Texas City is on Tuesday, March 30, at the TCO Cafe. There will be two pickup times: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Same rules apply as above for packet pick-up.

Please make sure you update your cell phone number when picking up your packet. We need a way to contact you if plans and logistics change (remember last year?).

There will be a packet pick-up for out of town riders, but date and times have not been set.

Waivers for Team BP and NMSS

Both waivers required are available on this website.

Wristbands

You will receive the wristbands you purchased online at packet pick-up.  Please bring a copy of your PayPal receipt in case of a record-keeping error.

If you did not purchase a wristband online, you may still buy up to three total per rider for $25 each (exact cash only).

Maps from NMSS

Maps for the ride weekend are available on the NMSS website:  nationalmssociety.org

Logistics for both days

See “Weekend Update” letter for weekend logistics.  More detailed information will be forthcoming.  We need everyone to be very safety conscious in the parking lots and in the garages.

Tent reservations

If you wish to use a personal tent, tent reservations must be made on this website.  No exceptions.

Bike transport for out-of-town riders (as in there is none)

There is no bike transportation or receiving for bikes from out-of-town riders.  If you are not traveling with your bike, please contact a local bike store (list available on the NMSS website) for possible options.

NMSS Online Safety quiz

Safety is our number one goal, but only 130 out of our 750+ riders have taken the safety quiz, which is bad.  Please take the online safety quiz – it only takes a few minutes.  Next year, we will make this mandatory to go along with the hands-on safety clinic requirement.

Bike management for April 17 in La Grange

There is no bike storage in La Grange other than the team trucks, and once you put your bike in one, it is not accessible until the next morning.  If you need your bike before then, or maintenance is needed, please put it in the NMSS bike corral.  Any bikes laying around will be put in a truck immediately.

Everything you wanted to know about the BP MS150

The Team BP Captains have made available the PowerPoint presentation from the March 9 Lunch & Learn “Everything You Wanted to Know About the BP MS150 But Were Afraid to Ask” – logistics, packing, preparing, what to expect on the ride, the works.

The PowerPoint presentation is nearly 7 MBs, so be patient when opening or downloading the document.

Cycling stretches to prevent injuries

For those team members lucky enough to attend the Team BP lunch and learn on February 3, you received a fantastic discussion by Coach Henderson on Conditioning For Success – Fueling and conditioning for success and keeping it safe – common mistakes rider’s make.  Part of her presentation covered stretching to prevent cycling injuries.  Click the PDF link below for photos and instructions on several stretches ideally suited for cyclists.

Local Bike Shop Discounts

Want to save some money? Several local bike shops have offered discounts to Team BP members as part of their “Team Support” programs.

While Team BP does not promote using any single bicycle shop, these free programs allow our riders the benefit of discounts and promotions. Please note that signing up for the program is free, not every service the bike shop provides is free.

Signing up for these programs is easy. Simply follow the instructions described at the attached links:
